PESHTIGO, WI (WTAQ) – Marinette County Sheriff’s Department and the DNR have closed a shooting range is Peshtigo after a recent scare.
“They were pinned down by gunfire and bullets hitting the water and going over their head and they were scared.”
Marinette County Jerry Sauve says it is not the first report of stray bullets, but it is the final straw for now.
Recently kayakers on the Lower Peshtigo River were nearly hit by gunfire coming from Hipke Road Firearms Shooting Range, so it is time to close it.
“The problem lies in that it is unsupervised, there is no check-in or check out,” he says. “Sure, there are some range rules posted, but you know how that goes.”
He says houses and garages have been hit in the past.
“I don’t think I would be doing my job if I did not urge the DNR to close it.”
He hopes they can investigate the problems, fix the problems and maybe someday open it again.
Sheriff Sauve would like to see the range supervised so they control who uses it and how they use it.
