GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – A Green Bay homeless man is planning to take legal action against the Green Bay Police Department after he says a K9 officer bit him in the leg while he was sleeping under a tree.
Green Bay Police Chief Andrew Smith says the incident happened on July 8th near Washington Street in Downtown Green Bay.
The K9 was being used by officers to track a domestic violence suspect who they believed was armed.
During the search, the K9 had mistaken the homeless man sleeping under the tree as the suspect.
That’s when the attack took place.
According to Smith, the K9 was pulled away almost immediately after and the man was given medical treatment,
While the man who was bit claims that police did not call off the K9 right away.
“I don’t recall anything like this happening in the recent past. But unfortunately, it’s something that occurred and we are going to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again in the future,” says Smith.
He adds that the K9 involved will be receiving some additional training in the near future and that the department is sorry about what happened.
