MADISON, WI (WHBL) – State officials are reminding people to keep their political signs out of public right of ways.
The Department of Transportation wants residents to remember that putting signs on the sides of state and federal highways can create potential safety hazards. You also need to keep signs out of public boulevards in city streets as well. Improperly placed signs can distract other drivers and block their line of sight while making turns, and can also be a hazard to road crews trying to take them down.
After the election, signs with wire supports degrade in the weather, leaving only the wire frame that is difficult to see. That can be dangerous to mowers and and other equipment cleaning up the roads in the spring.
Political signs are allowed on private property without a billboard permit as long as the signs do not exceed 32 square feet and contain no flashing lights or moving parts.
