FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A man was rescued from the Fond du Lac River after capsizing his kayak Saturday morning.
Around 7:39 a.m., a report was received of a man who had capsized his kayak and was in the Fond du Lac River north of Mascoutin Valley State Park Trail, located in the Eldorado Marsh State Wildlife area.
When authorities arrived, they were unable to get to the man due to ice on the river. The Lamartine Fire Department arrived on scene and utilized inflatable rescue sleds to successfully rescue the man, a 27-year-old, who was then transported to SSM St. Agnes Hospital for hypothermia treatment. He had been in the water for approximately 1 hour.
The man said he had been deer hunting and put his kayak in the river around 6:15 a.m. When he was paddling upstream, the kayak went over a patch of ice which broke away, causing him to capsize. The man said he had attempted to walk through the water back to the bridge, but upon realizing how far he had gone and how cold the water was, he stopped to call 911.
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office, Lamartine Fire Department, City of Fond du Lac Fire Department Paramedics, and wardens from the Wisconsin DNR all responded to the scene for this rescue.
The Wisconsin DNR will handle further follow up and investigation.
