Monday was opening night of the college basketball season. The Green Bay Phoenix men and women both opened on the road.
The ladies fell at Drake 80-67. Green Bay trailed most of the way but closed to within 58-55 early in the 4th quarter. That’s when Drake went on a 16-4 run to put the game out of reach. Tatum Koenig led the Phoenix with 13 points, Cassie Schiltz added 12. Green Bay will host Marist in their home opener at the Kress Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Green Bay men lost at Indiana State 80-53 . Head Coach Will Ryan’s third season began with a competitive first half as GB was down just 34-31. It was a different story after intermission as the Sycamores lit it up from the floor while the Phoenix went cold and had turnover issues. Davin Ziegler led GB in his debut with 19 points and 8 rebounds. The Phoenix takes on the Georgetown Hoyas in Washington D.C. on Saturday.
The Wisconsin Badgers defeated South Dakota 85-59 at the Kohl Center. Tyler Wahl led the Badgers with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Chucky Hepburn added 14. Next for the Badgers is the doubleheader with the women’s team Friday at the home of the Milwaukee Brewers, American Family Field. The first ever college basketball games on the diamond will have the women host Kansas State while the men play Stanford.
Marquette held off Radford 79-69 at Fiserv Forum in the opener for the Golden Eagles. Osh Ighodoro led Marquette with 19 points and 7 rebounds.
Milwaukee blitzed MSOE 102-46 to open it’s season.
