NEENAH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Kids beat the heat in an unconventional way Friday morning.
Instead of playing outside, they cooled off by making their very own slime with the Neenah Parks and Recreation Department. Kids had contests to see whose slime was the bounciest, stretchiest and most colorful. They had a chance to get even more competitive by playing slime bingo.
Neenah summer school was canceled because of the heat Thursday. The district does not hold summer school classes on Fridays.
Meteorologists were predicting heat indexes to reach as high as 105 degrees on Friday.
“We’ve had quite a few different concerns this week regarding the weather of are we going to keep our programs on,” Stephanie Schott, the Recreation Supervisor for the Neenah Parks and Recreation Department said.
“Those are always super hard decisions to make, but the nice part about it is a lot of our programs are more drop in, so parents have that ability to make that decision on their own.”
The Neenah Parks and Recreation Department does see a rise in attendance when it offers indoor programming on hot days such as Friday, according to Schott.
“We’re definitely thankful that we have these awesome shelters that are air-conditioned. So we’re really trying to utilize those on the hot days,” Schott said.
“So even with our weekly programs we try to get the kids inside for some of that time as well as still having fun in the shaded and outside areas.”
Some of the kids were grateful to be indoors.
“Outside I was like melting to death, and I was surprised my dog even liked it out there,” 8-year-old Owen Gries said.
