BELLEVUE, WI (WTAQ) – The Village of Bellevue has officially banned vaping for minors.
The village board passed the ordinance July 10, which prohibits those under the age of 18 from possessing or using the tobacco-less products, often referred to as electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes.
Those not in compliance can be fined anywhere between $10 to $100.
Neenah banned vaping for minors last year, while Kimberly and Little Chute following suite earlier this year.
State health officials reported last week that eight teenagers were hospitalized in July with seriously damaged lungs from suspected vaping.
Officials say e-cigarette cartridges can contain toxic chemicals that have been shown to damage the lungs.
It is believed that prolonged or continued exposure to these chemicals can lead to serious health issues such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which is a permanent condition that makes the lungs less effective at transporting oxygen.
