STANFOLD, WI (WSAU) — One of the last remaining alcohol-free communities in Wisconsin will hold an informal straw poll on allowing the sale of booze.
Residents of the Barron County Town of Stanfold will vote on a non-binding referendum next month on whether they should lift their ban on the sale of alcohol within town limits. The poll question was brought on by a request from the owners of a local orchard, who would like to sell their own wine at their store.
Since the referendum is non-binding, it would not change any of the town’s current ordinances. It would only serve as guidance to the Town Board on what action the residents would like to see.
Some have pushed back against the sale of alcohol, saying it would increase traffic in the community.
They aren’t the only community that has considered a move like this in recent memory. Back in 2016, the Door County Village of Ephraim passed a referendum that allowed alcohol sales after they had been dry since their founding in 1853.
