APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – ThedaCare now offers new medication take-back boxes.
It is part of an opioid awareness campaign, with a purpose to get drugs safely out of the home and it is making disposal easier for everyone.
“They will only be located in our hospitals, but they will be available 24-7.”
Dr. Jennifer Frank is Senior Medical Officer at ThedaCare. She says this is unique compared to other hospitals and it can make a big difference.
“I think this is ThedaCare demonstrating a commitment to keep our community safe.”
Frank says the permanent boxes are a convenient and safe way to dispose of unused medications.
“We know that medications that are leftover or expired stay in kitchen cabinets or medicine cabinets and could be used by other family members.
When flushed down the toilet or drain, prescription drugs can also cause harm to the environment.
The boxes are available Appleton, Neenah, Shawano, Waupaca, Berlin, New London and ThedaCare Cancer Care in Oshkosh.

Dr. Jennifer Frank is Senior Medical Officer at ThedaCare. She says there are four big reasons why left over prescription drugs should be disposed of right away.
“The medication could expire and some of the medication looks attractive and could get the attention of a younger child and this is a substance of abuse.”
Some items that will not be accepted in the boxes are Needles/lancets/syringes, thermometers, IV bags, diabetes test kits, personal care products like shampoo, lotion, etc., inhalers and any liquids.
