WINNECONNE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Wisconsin Department of Transportation opened the newly-constructed Wolf River fishing platforms in Winneconne Friday.
The concrete fishing platforms in Winnebago County are just north of the new Wolf River Bridge and extend about 230 feet from both shores.
The platforms were part of the WIS 116 (Main St.) reconstruction and Wolf River Bridge replacement project started in 2017.
The new bridge was built higher than the old one, making it unsafe to fish from. The new fishing platforms are in the place of where the old bridge used to be.
“Fishing is and has always been an important part of the Winneconne community so by providing this opportunity, certainly it’s an attractive element to the downtown area,” WisDOT project manager Bill Bertrand said.
“Winneconne is able to offer that, bring people into Winneconne and allows a longstanding tradition of having fishing in the downtown area.”
Each fishing platform cost about $600,000.
