GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Hundreds of people walked Saturday morning to raise awareness for heart disease and storke in Green Bay.
The American Heart Association had its annual walk at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) About 610,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year–that’s 1 in every 4 deaths.
The CDC says Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. More than half of the deaths due to heart disease in 2009 were in men.
“I think it’s really important because it gains awareness. Again, 80%t of heart disease is preventable. If we can just get the word out of simple fixes, like lowering your blood sugar, lowering your sodium intake, we can change the outcome of a lot of people’s health,” said Jane Lowe.
The heart walk’s website says so far it raised $22,651.
