SHIOCTON, WI (WTAQ) – A Shawano County man was injured after being gored by an elk on his property.
“This is not something you see or hear of every day in Shawano County.”
The call came in Saturday night.
Shawano County Sheriff Captain Ty Raddant says the man was out feeding the elk when one seemed to turn on him and charged and hit him in the chest with his antler.
“It punched a hole in his chest.”
He says the man was able to get to a neighbors house and they called for an ambulance.
The man owns Navarino Valley Elk Ranch.
Kevin Wallenfang of the DNR says it seems uncommon but the time of year may be a factor.
“It is the rut right now so they can go a little crazy,” he said. “They may do things this time of the year that they may normally not do just because of their aggression.
Shawano County Sheriff’s Department responded to make sure that the elk was not loose and that nobody else was in danger.
The man was transported to the hospital, the extent of the injuries is unknown.
