SHAWANO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Shawano County celebrated its 400th barn quilt on Saturday.
A barn quilt is a painting on the outside of a barn often featuring bright colors with a number of different designs.
The Shawano County barn quilt project started 12 years ago with the goal of bringing more tourists to the county.
“It’s a milestone that when I started this project I never in my wildest dreams we’d have 400 barn quilts,” said Jim Leuenberger, the coordinator of the project. “When I did an interview early in 2011 when whoever was interviewing me asked how many quilts are you going to have? I said my favorite number is 44 so I hope we at least have 44.”
Leuenberger says he is not sure how many more quilts he will do, but he says there are plenty of barns in Shawano County that could still use a quilt.
