OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – U.S. Representative Glenn Grothman, R-6th District addressed the situation in Syria during a town hall meeting in Oshkosh Wednesday.
Grothman says he’s hopeful President Trump will take steps to protect American allies.
“I will contact him and hopeI’ve tried to contact himI hope that he meets with Russia, and we do something to protect the Kurds before we pull out,” he said.
Grothman also spoke about the ongoing impeachment inquiry into President Trump.
It was standing room only at Black Wolf Town Hall in Oshkosh.
The congressman’s supporters and skeptics seemed to be split down the middle.
“You and I don’t agree on a lot!” said one of the constituents in attendance.
Another said she was there to stand behind Rep. Grothman.
“The democrats are so crazy that I have to come and show up just to give you my support.”
Grothman spoke openly about the impeachment inquiry Democrats launched against President Trump.
“It’s frustrating the degree to which some people have wanted President Trump impeached from the day he took office,” he said. “You have to wonder about the sincerity of those people.”
The inquiry came after a call between President Trump and Ukraine. A whistleblower complaint alleges the president leveraged U.S. military aid to get Ukraine to investigate former vice president Joe Biden, and his son.
“I think the majority of Americans were not aware that vice president Biden’s son was making money in Ukraine, at the same time that he was, kind of, the American liaison to Ukraine,” said Grothman.
And when asked whether he agreed with the White House’s decision to not cooperate with the impeachment inquiry
“It depends on what’s being asked,” Grothman said. “Obviously, you cannot operate a White House if everything you say in private is just turned around and made public.”
A constituent there adamantly disagreed.
“Give Congress everything they want; show its transparency. Nothing kills something that’s false and a witch hunt like the light of day.”
Impeachment inquiry aside, Grothman also answered questions about the often-contentious relationship between Republicans and Trump.
“He’s one of the few presidents I’ve ever seen that stood up for faith, and family and country and had to fight his way through things, without a lot of support. My question is why, as Republicans, aren’t we standing behind him more?”
Grothman said he thinks some of those Republicans may be jealous.
“That he became President when they didn’t and they feel they’re more qualified,” said Grothman. “I disagree with the President some of the time but, I’ll tell you, if we didn’t have him, we’d have a lot of problems.”
