WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — This is the fourth year that the Tuesday after Thanksgiving has been known as Giving Tuesday.
Sue Haupt, Communications Director for the United Way of Marathon County, said, “The idea is really following Black Friday, Shop Local Saturday, and Cyber Monday, it’s time to step back and focus on giving something back to your local community.”
Haupt says it can be as simple as just helping out at a local non-profit organization or shoveling your neighbor’s driveway.
She said, “Certainly, there’s any number of places where you can donate monetarily. But, it’s also a great opportunity to volunteer with a local organization. I don’t think there’s a non-profit, or school, or church group that probably wouldn’t welcome extra volunteers.”
“Anyone who goes to the United Way website can actually download a little, what we’re calling ‘unselfie sheets’. It has the Giving Tuesday information on it and you fill that out and take a selfie, post it on social media, and use the hashtag Giving Tuesday MC,” said Haupt.
There is an option to participate in Giving Tuesday online by purchasing winter clothing for children on the United Way of Marathon County’s website. Today and tomorrow, the United Way, along with an anonymous donor, will match whatever is purchased.
