One last improbable rally wasn’t enough as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5 in 10 innings at American Family Field Monday night. Fifteen minutes after Hunter Renfro’s walk off RBI single, Milwaukee learned Philadelphia had shut out Houston 3-0 to secure the final Wild Card spot in the National League playoffs, ending the Brewers’ run of four straight post-season appearances.
Give the Crew credit for not giving in with their 40th come from behind victory of the season. Christian Yelich hit his 14th homer of the year to stake Milwaukee to a 1-0 lead in the second. Former Brewer prospect Cooper Hammel tied it up in the third with a solo shot off starter Brandon Woodruff. Arizona moved in front on a Sergio Alcantara sacrifice fly in the 5th. Woodruff made it through six innings, giving up two runs on two hits with seven strikeouts. Alcantara tagged reliever Hoby Milner with a two run shot in the 7th and it was looking bleak for the Brewers until the ninth.
Renfro started the rally with his 29th homer of the year and the Brewers tied it up when Victor Caratini’s ground ball caromed off the second baseman’s glove allowing Yelich and Kolton Wong to score to tie it up.
After the D-Backs plated a run in the top the of the 10th, Willy Adames answered that with an RBI single and Renfro came through with the game winning knock. The Brewers improved to 85-75 with two games left. The Phillies got six perfect innings from Aaron Nola and two homers from Kyle Schwarber to win in Houston and knock out the Brewers.
