Milwaukee Brewers
Win games and get a little help is the formula for the Milwaukee Brewers to reach the post-season for the 5th year in a row. Both happened Wednesday and Milwaukee is now only one half game away from the final National League Wild Card spot.
The Brewers put together a complete game in beating the Central Division champion Cardinals 5-1 at American Family Field Wednesday night. Brandon Woodruff was outstanding again, working six scoreless innings, giving up five hits and striking out 10. That established a new franchise record for Woodruff who has reached double digit strikeouts for the 4th consecutive start. Hunter Renfro’s RBI single in the third put Milwaukee on top and Keston Hiura delivered and RBI double in the 6th. Matt Bush came on in relief and for the second night in a row, was taken over the wall by the Card’s Andrew Knizner, just his 4th homer of the year. St. Louis loaded the bases but Devin Williams came on to induce a ground ball to Willy Adames who glove flipped it to Kolton Wong who made an awkward relay to first to complete the inning ending double play.
Milwaukee put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the 8th, Christian Yelich drew a bases loaded walk and then Victor Caratini came through with a ground rule double plating two more.
The win gets Milwaukee to 83-72 on the season and they got the help they needed from the Chicago Cubs, who scored all four runs in the 5th inning, Christopher Morel hitting a three run shot in a 4-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies who dropped to 83-71. The Phillies have one more at Wrigley Field Thursday afternoon while the Brewers welcome the Miami Marlins to Am Fam for a four game series. Eric Lauer will start for the Crew and if the formula holds again today, a Milwaukee win and Philly loss will have the Brewers holding that coveted Wild Card spot into the final six games of the season.
