KAUKAUNA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Heart of the Valley Metropolitan Sewerage District broke ground on a project that will take its filtration system to the next level.
The organization treats wastewater from Kaukauna, Little Chute, Kimberly, Combined Locks and the Darboy Sanitary District. It also treats septic and holding tank wastes trucked in from the town of Kaukauna, Buchanan, Vandenbroek, Freedom and Harrison.
The current filtration system removes about 95% of solids and phosphorus but with the new filters, director Brian Helminger says it will remove about 98%.
On Wednesday, it started its $19.1 million project to install six new filters, providing an extra margin of protection for effluent that goes into the Fox River.
“The filters will allow us to meet all our obligations in our discharge permit with Wisconsin DNR,” Helminger said.
The filters are expected to be fully operating by 2024.
