GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Halloween can be a safe and fun time of year, but police say parents need to make a plan that includes safe practices.
“We just want parents to be engaged with their children on Halloween,” said Green Bay Police Commander Kevin Warych. “It is always recommended that parents follow their kids as they go door to door Trick Or Treating.”
Tainted candy and dangerous driving are usually two big safety concerns when kids are out trick or treating, but Parole agents in Milwaukee are reporting that they are making sure that registered sex offenders follow the rules on Halloween by not handing out candy.
In Green Bay, police and probation/ parole have a good working relationship, but Commander Kevin Warych says parents being involved is the best way to go.
“As a parent, we encourage them to walk with their kids and also look out for other kids as well.”
He says if parents would like to know if registered sex offenders reside in the areas that they are trick or treating, that is public knowledge.
“If people take some time and look up information online, they are better educated as to what is going on around them and then they can make the decision from there,” he said. “Parents should be able to know where their kids are and where their kids can go and really know the demographics of the neighborhood.”

State law bans sex offenders from handing out candy or participating in Trick or Treating.
Agents in Madison arrested five sex offenders, and one of them may have been handing out candy.
