It’s been over five weeks since the Milwaukee Brewers captured a series on the road and the drought continued in Colorado as the Rockies jumped on the Crew early in an 8-4 victory at Coors Field Wednesday afternoon. Colorado pushed across four runs in the second inning off starter Eric Lauer, Alan Trejo delivered a two run homer. Michael Toglia belted a three run blast in the third and Lauer would leave the game after two and two thirds, allowing the 7 runs on 6 hits. The Brewers say Lauer reported elbow tightness, the left hander saying the arm felt like “jello”. He could miss a start or two. It was a painful series for Kolton Wong too as he sat out the finale with a sore ankle. Kyle Freeland got the win working six innings, allowing just one run. Keston Hiura led off the 5th with a triple and came home on a Victor Caratini ground out. Andrew McCutcheon and Luis Urias hit solo home runs in the top of the 9th to make the score respectable.
The Brewers have slipped to to 71-65 and are now all but out of the NL Central race as the St. Louis Cardinals rallied for five runs in the bottom of the ninth, Tommy Edmon delivering a walk off two run double in the Cards 6-5 win over the Washington Nationals, stretching their lead to 9 and a half games over Milwaukee. Philadelphia beat Miami 4-3 and San Diego knocked off Arizona 6-3, pushing the Brewers four games off the pace for the final Wild Card spot.
Milwaukee returns to American Family Field to host the San Francisco Giants in a doubleheader on Thursday. Corbin Burnes and Freddy Peralta will get the starts for the Brewers. Pre-game coverage of the twin bill begins at 2:35 PM with the game one first pitch at 3:10 PM on WNFL.
