TWO RIVERS, WI (WTAQ) – The Department of Justice is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left one person dead in Two Rivers Monday night.
A routine traffic stop at a gas station along Washington Street turned fatal after an officer opened fire on a man inside the vehicle.
“It’s a tough set of circumstances, obviously, for the department and the community. Our thoughts are not only with the individual officer involved – who is currently on administrative leave – but all of the officers,” says Two Rivers City Manager Greg Buckley, “it’s a solemn responsibility our officers have that they’re entrusted with the use, when appropriate, of fatal force and sadly those occasions do arise.”
A firearm was found at the scene. No officers were injured. The department is working with officers to deal with the impact of the situation.
Buckley says “we’re sitting tight, I know the agency is providing as much counseling and other support as is appropriate for all members of the department.”
Officers removed crime tape from the scene around 11 a.m. Tuesday, but there is no indication of how long the investigation might take.
“We’ll await the outcome of an objective investigation by DCI and the sharing of those results with the community,” says Buckley.
No further information about the case has been released.
