ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ) – The cold and snow didn’t stop the dedication of a donated Canadian National SW1500 diesel locomotive at the National Railway Museum in Ashwaubenon. Jacqueline Frank is the museum’s CEO.
“It’s a 1968 switch engine that has been used in this area, so we’re bringing part of our history home with us,” said Jacqueline Frank, the museum’s CEO.
And that history isn’t just going to sit around on display. It’s going to be a part of the museum’s regular rotation of locomotives that will be available for rides throughout the season. This year, you won’t have to wait for warmer weather to take a ride on this train.
“It will start service for the Polar Express,” said board president David Ward. “Which will be starting in a couple of weeks here.”
The railroad museum ran the train several times throughout the day. The train was donated by Canadian National railroad.
Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach says that the additional will only add to the museum’s draw as a tourist destination, especially as more lake cruises are expected to visit Green Bay next year.
“We do have a gem here, a gem that really, from a national standpoint, even an international standpoint, people from across the United States come here to see this,” Streckenbach said.
Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich and Ashwaubenon Village President Mary Kardowskee were also in attendance.
