WINNEBAGO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) – Fox Valley drivers will be able to go faster along a stretch of Highway 10/441 starting this weekend. The DOT is bumping up the speed limit between Oneida Street and Highway CB at the end of the day on Friday.
Drivers frequenting that section of Highway 10/441 will soon see speed limit signs for 65mph. Wisconsin DOT Project Manager Kurt Peters says several factors allow them to ramp things up.
“With the new design and construction, we’ve realigned several curves, making them actually at a 70 mile an hour design speed,” Peters says.
That includes the realignment of a major curve in the highway near Midway Road.
This comes as a five-year expansion project involving the Michael G. Ellis interchange wraps up. As speed limits are increased, there is often the question of safety. Peters says safety was taken into consideration when they made their calculations and improvements.
“Wider shoulders, built a second crossing bridge, now there’s four lanes in each direction. So it is a safer roadway.”
DOT officials remind drivers to keep an eye on lead feet and to not get ahead of themselves.
“No speed limit will officially change until the 65mph speed limit signs are posted, and posted speed limits apply when weather conditions are favorable and pavement is dry,” says DOT Regional Communications Manager Melissa Kok.
The interchange has been under construction since 2014. Kok thanks all of the local commuters for their patience as the project took place.
“we appreciate everyone’s patience through this project. We know there were a lot of narrow lanes and lane closures impacting everyone’s daily travels.”
Remaining construction work on 441/10 includes installing an overhead digital message sign, which is expected early next month, and minor landscaping and staining, which is expected to be done next year.
