GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — We’ve all heard it before: death and taxes, death and taxes. They’re the only things you can count on in life. However, the share of the average Wisconsinite’s income that went to state taxes has actually gone down over the past 20 years.
“Over the last 10 or 20 years you’ve seen taxes fall as a share of personal income in the state from 12.4% to 10.3%,” said Jason Stein, Research Director of the Wisconsin Policy Forum.
Stein says that a large portion of the state’s revenue still comes directly from taxation as opposed to other sources.
“In Wisconsin we rely more on state and local taxes [than other states],” said Stein. “Quite a bit less on federal aid and a little less on fees for services.”
The state is still the 19th highest tax state in the country, but that number is down from being ranked the 7th highest back in 1997.
