GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The Greater Green Bay YMCA is hoping members will jingle their weight away with a holiday fitness program.
Trainers at Green Bay area YMCA’s are helping people with their Holiday Trimmings. Not turkey trimmings, but waistline. Senior Healthy Living Director Eric Gorder says people tend to add a bit of stuffing around the winter holidays.
“It gets busy with a little more stress, they’re eating more, their inhibitions go down a little bit. They’re like ‘Forget about it, I’ll just wait until January and start fresh,’ and it kind of gives them a built-in excuse that it’s ok to not take care of themselves for the next six or seven weeks,” Gorder says, “it does offer enough support that these people are able to tie into something else and give them a little bit more accountability and motivation to not push everything off for seven weeks.”
Every location around the Greater Green Bay area is participating. Weigh-in stations can be found in the lobbies. Gorder says it’s incredibly simple for people to get involved.
“They get weighed in, they get logged into our system, and then throughout the next weeks, they’ll receive healthy holiday eating tips and an exercise challenge for the week. And then just support for the next six weeks with all the junk food and alcohol that’s out there.”
While the turkey and colder weather may entice people to stay inside, Gorder hopes the program helps get them on their feet.
“Wake up and you have that and you’re like ‘you know what? I’ll go in today for 30 minutes or an hour.’ It might not be their normal routine, but they stay a little more consistent than the person who doesn’t have something else that’s driving them a little bit,” Gorder explains.
Weigh-ins are being held at all locations through Saturday. Weigh-outs start December 30th. Participants who hold steady or lose weight through November and December are entered into a drawing for prizes.
