OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A student was shot at Oshkosh West High School Tuesday morning after stabbing a school resource officer.
“There was an altercation at the SRO’s office, initial reports said that the student produced a weapon and stabbed the officer, at which time the officer fired on the student,” Oshkosh Police Chief Dean Smith told reporters, calling the shooting a “tragedy”.
The student and the officer remain at an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
That shooting triggered a lockdown at the school.
“Today’s incident was a contained situation,” Superintendent Vicki Cartwright said. “We are so grateful for the proactive safety measures in place throughout our district.”
When the gunshot rang out some students opted to evacuate the school. Hashim Mumtaz attends the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Mosque right across the street. He says one student, who also attends the mosque, took decisive action during the incident.
“One of the girls was brave enough to bring a bunch of students with her as the initial thing was unfolding,” Mumtaz told WTAQ. “She brought them into the mosque because she knew the code. There were about 20 or 30 students here.”
School WILL be canceled tomorrow for all Oshkosh Area School District Schools.
The shooting took place around 9:12 a.m.
The incident is being turned over to the State Department of Criminal Investigation.
