Milwaukee Brewers
The Milwaukee Brewers got parched in the desert as they opened a week long road trip with a 5-0 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field Thursday night. Merrill Kelly shut down the Brewers on just four hits, two from Jace Peterson through his 7 innings for his 12th win of the year. Arizona meanwhile, got after Brandon Woodruff early. Christian Walker belted a two run homer in the first and Josh Rojas knocked Woodruff out of the game with a two run double in the 6th. Woodruff’s line was his worst since early May, lasting 5 and two thirds, giving up 8 hits and five runs. All five runs and 6 of the 8 hits came with two outs. Even more concerning was Christian Yelich leaving the game after his second at bat when Manager Craig Counsell said his neck tightened up. Yelich likely won’t play in game two but Counsell doesn’t think it will be a long term issue. Eric Lauer will get the start against ex-Brewer Zach Davies Friday night. The loss drops the Brewers even further behind the idle Cardinals in the division race and both the Phillies and Padres for the final wild card spot. Milwaukee is now 6 and a half games behind St. Louis, 3 behind San Diego and 3 and a half below Philadelphia.
