OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) – Students at Oshkosh West High School are back in class today (FRIDAY) for the first time since an officer-involved shooting there on Tuesday.
School Superintendent Vickie Cartwright welcomed students and staff back to Oshkosh West.
“In the days since this traumatic event, our school leaders and staff members, have been taking positive steps to provide a safe and welcoming environment to return.”
And that the momentum moving forward.
“We’re going to persevere, and we’re going to become a stronger community because of this.”
She says from the time they walked in the door today the goal is to make sure students feel welcome and safe.
“We have wristbands that say “We’re Wildcat Strong”, just to help set that atmosphere and that positive momentum.”
It’s all part of what Cartwright calls the ‘new normal’ at Oshkosh West.
“As a school community, it is important to make this transition as reassuring and comfortable as possible.”
Additional police are on hand now and will be in the coming days.
The school resource officer is recovering from a serious stab wound he suffered. The 16-year-old student who was shot during the assault is being held in the Winnebago County jail, facing attempted murder charges.
