MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The U.S. Census Bureau is looking to hire thousands of temporary workers ahead of the 2020 Census.
There’s a huge push to hire more workers to help collect data for the 2020 census, but according to a Census Bureau spokesperson, many states, including Wisconsin, have a long way to go.
“The Census Bureau is looking to hire people in their own communities. We do that because we want people who know their community and when they’re knocking on those doors hopefully they’re recognizable and this just ensures that people are comfortable and we can ensure an accurate count,” said Karen Davis.
The census is done every 10 years, and the data collected is crucial in allocating specific resources in every state and different communities.
“Some outcomes of the census include deciding the number of seats a state gets in Congress. as well as determining the funding for states annually,” she explained. “This also determines things like jobs, infrastructure, hospitals, and schools.”
In Northeast Wisconsin, there are about 1,600 census takers ready to work come next spring, but more than 4,600 workers are needed to get the job done. The pay rate is now being raised from $17 to $24 an hour in an effort to reach their goal.
“These census takers positions are running from 10 weeks to 4 months so we are looking for college students, high school students, as long as you are 18 before the start of the position. Retirees, veterans, and the positions offer a lot of flexibility, so this is a good opportunity for anyone looking for a job in the spring and summer to apply now,” said Davis.
