It was looking like a bleak weekend in Chicago as the Milwaukee Brewers had already dropped the first two games of their series with the Cubs at Wrigley Field. A Friday night slugfest with an 8-7 loss, an excruciating 5-4 loss in 11 innings on Saturday where Milwaukee had four separate one run leads slip away. On Sunday, starter Brandon Woodruff gave up a first inning home run to Ian Happ and in the 4th, Seyia Suzuki took him deep to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead. After getting nothing accomplished against Chicago starter Justin Steele, the Brewer offense finally came alive against the bullpen. Rowdy Tellez hit a homer in the top of the 7th to get the Brewers on the board. It might have tied the game if not for Andrew McCutcheon getting caught stealing second. Keston Hiura came through however with a blast of his own to get the game even at 2. A Willy Adames sacrifice fly in the 8th put Milwaukee on top and Huira finished it off with another homer, a two run shot that cut into the wind to left for a 5-2 lead. Taylor Rogers finished off the ninth for his first save as a Brewer and 29th of the year. Brent Suter got the win in relief of Woodruff who gave up 2 runs on four hits in 5 and two thirds innings.
The victory sends the Brewers to Los Angeles for another three game series against the team with the best record in baseball. Milwaukee stands 64-56 but remain five games behind the St. Louis Cardinals who won their 7th straight on Sunday, 6-4 over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Brewers are a game and a half behind San Diego for the final Wild Card spot in the National League after the Padres got past Washington 2-1. Eric Lauer will face Julio Urias in the series opener at Dodgers Stadium Monday night. Pre-game coverage begins at 8:35 PM with a 9:10 PM first pitch on WTAQ.
