It was great baseball right to the last at bat. The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the red hot Los Angeles Dodgers 5-4 in 11 innings Tuesday night at American Family Field as Victor Caratini came through with a walk-off, two run single into right field squaring the four game series with the best team in baseball at a game apiece. The contest was loaded with big swings, dramatic plays and a surprise bunt.
Willy Adames got the Crew off to a great start with a two run homer in the first inning. Brandon Woodruff started and got through four scoreless innings, racking up 8 strikeouts. Los Angeles got back into the game with a pair of solo homers in the top of the 5th. Joey Gallo’s blast was followed one out later by a Mookie Betts homer that tied the game at 2. In the bottom of the 5th, Christian Yelich got a hold of one, traveling 451 feet to right center field. It was Yelich’s first homer since early July and first long ball at home since early May. Chris Taylor got the Dodgers back even taking reliever Matt Bush deep in the top of the 7th.
Taylor would momentarily save the Dodgers in the 10th when he chased down Andrew McCutcheon’s drive into the left center field gap with two runners on base. The spectacular diving catch set up the big finish.
Justin Turner delivered and RBI single off Brent Suter to give L.A. the 4-3 lead. To lead off the bottom of the 11th, Hunter Renfro surprised everyone by laying down a perfect bunt for a single putting runners on the corner. After Luis Urias drew a walk from closer Craig Kimbrel, Caratini sent a flare to shallow right field scoring McCutcheon from third and Renfro, gambling the ball wasn’t going to be caught, slid home to win the game.
The Brewers improved to 62-53 on the season but remained two games behind St. Louis in the NL Central race as the Cardinals walked off Colorado 5-4. Milwaukee is now just one game behind San Diego for the third and final wild card spot as the Padres fell to the Marlins 4-3.
Eric Lauer (8-3) will face Tony Gonsolin (14-1) in game three of the series Wednesday night. Pre-game coverage gets underway at 6:35 PM with a 7:10 PM first pitch on WTAQ.
