FOND DU LAC COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) – A New Year’s Eve Party turned tragic on Lake Winnebago.
Sheriff Officials say Lindsey Klima was attending a New Years Eve Party at an ice shanty on Lake Winnebago, when she left to smoke a cigarette.
“At about 4:40 we received a call from friends and family that were concerned and looking for an individual.”
Captain Ryan Waldschmidt of the Fond Du Lac County Sheriff’s Office said friends and family did not realize that she was missing.
“They had each thought that she had stayed with somebody else, and it took most of the day to realize that she was nowhere to be found.”
Waldschmidt said they believe that the 27-year old fell and froze with windchills listed at minus 20.
He said they believe she was also injured in the process.
“We suspect if she may have sustained an injury crawling up the rocks on to shore, and that might have hindered her ability to walk on shore.
Waldschmidt say they believe alcohol played a factor.
“We don’t know how much she had to drink, the toxicology reports will show us that.”
Waldschmidt says it’s common for people to host parties on the ice during this time of the year, and foul play is not suspected.
