OCONTO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) – It’s looking like a popular Oconto County campground will not be open this year.
Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest officials cite safety concerns in saying the Boulder Lake Campgrounds are closed until further notice.
“I’m not able to talk about what those safety concerns are, but the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest’s number one priority is public safety. We’re doing this in the interest of public safety, and reasons that are outside of our control.”
Public Affairs Officer Hilary Markin says they are not accepting reservations, with those who already booked getting a refund.
“Some of those were some of the same families, but there were 87 reservations made, as of January 2, that were canceled, and refunds were issued.”
Markin notes the Boulder Lake recreation area is currently open, but says that may soon change.
“Typically the campground opens May 1. So if we go forward with a closure at that site, obvoulsy we’ll do some messaging around that but right now, it’s just a closure until further notice.”
She expects they’ll make up for the lost income at their eight other area sites.
