Oy vay Brewers! A dreadful week ended with yet another walk off loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates who completed a three game sweep with a 5-4, 10 inning victory at PNC Park Thursday afternoon. The winning run came across when new relief pitcher Matt Bush uncorked a wild pitch with the bases loaded. It should never have come to that. A solo home run from Victor Caratini and Mike Brosseau’s two run shot gave the Brewers a 3-1 lead through six innings. Brandon Woodruff lasted six and a third, giving up 8 hits and two runs. Ben Gamel capped a two run rally with an RBI single off Brad Boxberger in the bottom of the 7th. Milwaukee loaded the bases with one out in the 9th but Tyrone Taylor’s hot grounder was speared by KeBryan Hayes at third and he turned an inning ending double play. In the 10th, Milwaukee got ’em loaded again and Kolton Wong got hit by a pitch to force in the lead run. Hunter Renfro looked like he would drive in a couple more but Gamel made a diving catch to end the frame. Brian Reynolds, who walked off the Brewers on Wednesday with a home run against Devin Williams, hit Bush’s first pitch into the right field corner for a ground rule double to tie the game and after a couple of intentional walks, Bush’s pitch got by Caratini and Reynolds walked home for the win. Milwaukee has now lost 4 straight and haven’t won since trading Josh Hader to San Diego.
The Brewers now have some company atop the NL Central as St. Louis swept two from Chicago getting both teams to 57-48 on the season. Milwaukee returns home to face Cincinnati in a weekend series at American Family Field. Eric Lauer will start for the Brewers. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:35 PM with a 7:10 PM first pitch on WTAQ.
