MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A salmonella outbreak is hitting parts of Wisconsin, including Green Bay, Fond du Lac and Neenah.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services announced Friday that it is investigating cases of salmonella associated with shelled peas — loose peas that are no longer in their pod — sold at Wisconsin farmers markets.
At least six people were infected with the same strain of the bacteria after purchasing the peas produced by Green Barn Farm Market in Ripon, according to DHS.
The peas were sold at farmers markets in Ripon, Green Bay, Madison and Fond du Lac. They were also sold at the Green Valley Acres Farm and Company farm stand in Neenah.
Anyone who purchased loose peas from Green Barn Farm Market or Green Valley Acres Farm since the beginning of July is advised to throw them away even if the peas have been frozen.
Signs and symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever and vomiting that lasts for several days. It may also cause bloodstream infections.
The infection is caused by salmonella bacteria, which is spread by consuming contaminated food or water. It’s also spread through direct or indirect contact with fecal matter from infected people or animals.
The investigation is still ongoing.
