MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – The WIAA says it plans to meet with state legislative finance co-chair John Nygren, to find out why he believes the high school sports association needs more public oversight.
Nygren, an Assembly Republican from Marinette, says the WIAA dropped the ball when it suggested that schools have their student sections stop chanting things like “Air Ball” to opponents at basketball games to improve sportsmanship.
In a newspaper column, the lawmaker says he’ll re-introduce a bill that never passed in 2009, to let schools join athletic associations only if those groups follow the open meetings and open records laws.
The WIAA’s suggestions were mocked by national sports outlets — students in at least two schools taped their mouths shut at recent games — and a star athlete was suspended for 5 games by her school for a critical tweet that included profanities.
Nygren says authorities like the WIAA will test its boundaries when left unchecked.
