Portland, OR (WTAQ) – A man is hospitalized in intensive care in Portland, Oregon after being attacked for wearing a Green Bay Packers stocking cap.
Sam Whitehorn was leaving a northwest Portland bar after the Packers lost their playoff game with Arizona Cardinals on Saturday when a group of men approached him and began beating him.
The 26 year old fell, his head hit on the concrete. He suffered a fractured skull, concussion and brain hemorrhage.
“to see that is heart-breaking because Sam is a brilliant kid, he never got a B in his life….we want him to get back to whoo he was”
Kelly Whitehorn is Sam’s mother….and is hoping police find the suspect. The family says the attackers were making fun of Sam’s hat and that the Packers had lost the game with the Cardinals.
“I think that there’s no tolerance for violent crime in a civilized society”
Police are actively working the case. Talking to people who were in the area at the time of the attack.
Meanwhile, A “Go Fund Me” account has raised more than $24 thousand for his medical care. Much of that money is being donated by fans of the Green Bay Packers.
Late Friday, the Green Bay Packers released a statement which said:
“The Green Bay Packers were saddened to learn of the senseless attack on Sam Whitehorn last weekend. We have been in touch with Sam’s family and have heard from many of their concerned friends, and send the organization’s best wishes for a quick and full recovery.”
