Neenah, WI (WTAQ) – Sturgeon spearing season begins tomorrow (Saturday) on the Lake Winnebago system. And after some worries as recently as a couple of weeks ago…the ice on the lakes appears to be good.
“From a month ago, where everyone was all worried and everything, the lake has really come around”
Don Herman, with the Otter Street Fishing Club, is the acknowledged expert on Lake Winnebago. He says there’s some cracks in the ice…but that goes with the territory every year.
Ice thickness on the big lake is anywhere from 12 to 16 inches. Good enough to handle the shanties and ATV’s. Herman says on a scale of 1 to 10….he rates it a 9.
“It’s pretty good, you can drive just about anywhere”
Sturgeon spearer Ken Inda, claimed his spot on Thursday and set up shop ahead of time. He was not overly concerned with ice conditions…even with the relatively mild winter we’ve had so far.
“I was never too worried about it. Like I said, I’ve been spearing for 40 years and never missed a year yet”
Even though the ice is in good shape, it’s important to remember that no ice is ever 100% safe. Check with local fishing clubs for the latest updates.
