UNDATED (WTAQ) – After being shut down last year when the Wisconsin DNR said it was unsafe, Door County’s Eagle Tower appears to be getting a new lease on life.
The office of Wisconsin State Sen. Frank Lasee (R-De Pere) and the DNR have been working on options to re-open the popular Peninsula State Park attraction.
“We discussed several options regarding the process for the Eagle Tower project,” says Ben Bergey, Director of State Parks and Recreation with the Wisconsin DNR. “While all options include a future tower the timeline, funding and process vary with each option.”
Bergey says their goal, no matter which option is selected, is to reopen Eagle Tower in 2017.
“There’s a process we have to go through, but we obviously share a goal of trying to get it open again at the earliest possible time,” remarked Bergey.
Eagle Tower was shut down last May after an inspection revealed safety issues with the structure.
Since then, the group Door Property Owners started an online petition trying to save the tower. It’s received over 1,700 signatures. That’s not surprising to Bergey.
“Not at all, in fact I can tell you that we understand the importance of Peninsula State Park,” said Bergey. “The importance of Eagle Tower, not just to visitors of the property, but to the community as a whole.”
