OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) – Wisconsin’s one-of-a-kind spearing season for sturgeon was only one-third as successful as last year.
The state DNR says only 703 of the large fish were taken from Lake Winnebago and adjacent lakes up the Fox River, before the 16-day season ended Sunday.
The harvest was miniscule compared to last year’s total of 2,160.
DNR biologist Ryan Koenigs blames a reduced water clarity, which made it harder to spearers to see their targets.
