GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The first European soccer match at Lambeau field is just around the corner.
FC Bayern Munich will take on Manchester City Saturday night.
Mia Leszko has learned from watching European soccer players on TV; now, she gets to see them play in person at Lambeau Field.
“It’s pretty cool to get that experience in our own hometown. I just have to drive down the street, and I can experience this. Not everyone gets that chance,” said Leszko.
She and most of the players and families with the Wisconsin United Football Club will be at Saturday’s game.
They plan to sit loud and proud in the stands.
“It is a pretty popular sport. I think it is growing as of today, but having this event here in Green Bay is going to make it a lot bigger,” said Leszko.
Leszko hopes it gets more people interested in playing the sport.
Corey Vann with Hagemeister Park hopes it will also get more people to watch the sport.
The downtown restaurant is hosting an FC Bayern Munich fan event on Friday night.
They’ll have retired player Giovane Elber there, plus live music and local vendors.
“We’re looking to have a good time with all of the fans for the soccer match coming into town,” said Vann.
Vann says the soccer game will hopefully bring a new crowd to the City Deck.
“It’s going to be exciting because there’s going to be a lot of people downtown Green Bay. We want everyone to see how great it is down here,” said Vann.
“What do you hope these players remember about Green Bay?” asked FOX 11.
“How close of a town it is and how connected we all are,” replied Leszko, “I hope they realize we’re all coming as this big group like we all know each other, and we all are going to go watch them play soccer.”
Some of the Wisconsin United players are at odds against who wins, but, overall, they’re excited to see two legendary teams take on Lambeau Field. They hope to get a few pointers from the players’ performances too.
