UNDATED (WTAQ) – You may notice some rumbling while driving through some road construction projects in Wisconsin this year.
That’s because the Wisconsin Department of Transportation says they plan to use temporary, portable rumble strips near 12 construction projects in 2016. DOT officials hope the strips improve safety by alerting drivers that they’re about to enter a construction zone and should slow down.
“Too often, drivers ignore signs telling them they’re entering a construction zone,” DOT Work Zone Operations Engineer Erin Schoon said in a news release. “Rumble strips are hard to ignore, and send a potentially life-saving message that drivers need to slow down and be extra cautious.”
The strips will be used on days when flaggers are working along roadways to direct traffic. Signs will alert drivers they’re approaching work zones and temporary rumble strips.
The DOT says 6 rumble strips are usually placed at each end of the construction zone.
In Northeast Wisconsin, the DOT plans to use the temporary rumble strips during construction on Highway 32 between New Holstein and Chilton, and at the Highway 151/49 interchange in the Waupun area.
