ONEIDA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Oneida tribal leaders discussed their concerns with the federal government’s interior secretary, Ryan Zinke, Tuesday.
Tribal members noted the importance of education and treatment of opioid related issues.
Zinke tells FOX 11 the government’s planned approach is to attack what he calls the heart of the issue by arresting drug dealers.
“We have a task force that we are coordinating with the tribes and the tribal police to go after the heart of the issue, which is the drug dealers. It’s a partnership, they’re a sovereign nation. But what we can do internally is support community rehabilitation center and make sure we have a drug task force all working together to combat opioids.”
Currently the tribe receives approximately $1 million from the Bureau of Indian Affairs to administer opioid programs.
