GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Green Bay Police Officer Craig Brey was honored by Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel as “Top Cop” after being the first officer on the scene during a disturbance at Lambeau Field last December.
Brey was recognized for acting quickly in confronting the suspect Chay Vang, after the call initially came in as an active shooter call.
“It’s a great award and very humbling, however, there were lots of other officers involved in helping the situation get resolved peacefully,” Brey told WTAQ’s Restoring Reason with John Muir.
Attorney General Brad Schimel said Officer Brey put himself in danger to protect others.
“Wisconsin law enforcement is always ready to take quick action, and when everyone else is running towards safety, they run towards the danger. Officer Brey and all of the responding officers that day kept the City of Green Bay and Lambeau Field safe,” Schimel said.
Brey said he was on another call when he was alerted of a disturbance at Lambeau Field. He said some factors made it easier to respond.
“We have a good feel for the layout because of our training and because we do work the games.”
He added what was concerning was the number of people in or around the stadium at the time.
“At that time of the day, there was between 750 and 800 people nearby.”
He said in this case, practice made perfect.
“Everyone kind of relied on training.”
He said you can train all you want, but until you get in that situation, you don’t know how you are going to react.
“
Green Bay Lieutenant Ben Allen nominated Brey and said he faced potential danger but did the right thing.
