NEENAH, WI (WTAQ)- The Neenah School District faces a big decision Tuesday night.
Schools in Neenah have been serving as polling places on election day, but with recent efforts to focus on school safety, the district feels that opening the school to the public on election day during school may not be the best option.
“We feel like there are options that the city can at least explore,” Communications Director Jim Strick says. “They don’t use City Hall, or the Public Library.
Strick says other options could be the district adminstration building, churches or fire stations.
Administration would like those options to be looked at since there is no screening process on election day like there is any other school day.
“Registered sex offenders, who knows who? Somebody walks in and says they are a registered voter, and we say okay come on in.”
Strick adds that it is even more concerning considering all the resources that are used to keep kids and staff safe on a regular school day.
“We are putting all these procedures in place and doing all these things, but then voting comes around and we are doing things different.”
One suggestion from the city is using teacher in-service days on election days so students wouldn’t be present, but the school says that may be an inconvenience to parents.
The school board will have the ultimate say on facility usage.
