GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Governor Tony Evers says his office has been in contact with Planned Parenthood Groups in Minnesota and Illinois, where abortion is still legal, making plans on how to ensure abortion access to Wisconsin residents.
Evers spoke Tuesday in Green Bay.
“We’ve been working with [them] this whole time thinking this horrible thing would happen, and it did,” said Evers. “We’re planning to continue to fight to overturn this mistaken law.”
The US Supreme Court overturned the 1973 Roe v Wade decision on Friday, ending the federal legalization of abortion, making it a state issue.
Evers predicted the abortion issue would take center stage in the November election.
“The people who are running for office are talking about Roe v Wade. It’s an issue that’s going to be part of the next election,” Evers said.
Evers has promised clemency to any doctor prosecuted under the 1849 law in Wisconsin banning abortion unless the pregnancy endangers the life of the mother, but it’s not clear whether or not that promise will cause any abortion doctors to stay in the state.
Wisconsin has an 1849 law on the books banning abortion unless the pregnancy endangers the life of the mother.
