APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Appleton is reminding residents there are places that private signs should not be posted.
Items such as rummage sale signs, advertising signs, political signs, items for sale signs and any other signs of that nature are not allowed on any public right-of-way.
The public right-of-way areas include:
- Boulevards (medians in the roadway and roundabouts)
- Terraces (area between sidewalks and roadway)
- Utility poles and any city owned traffic control box or support structure, or utility pole.
- Signage may not be posted on any tree in a public right-of-way.
Signs in the public right-of-way could be considered contraband or abandoned property, in violation of city ordinance.
However holding a sign in a public right-of-way is allowed, if you are in an area that you legally can be, and you are not obstructing any other pedestrians or traffic. You must physically be holding a sign, or it can be considered in violation and disposed of pursuant to city policy.
Effective immediately, the Appleton Police Department will start educating the public on where they can legally place their signs.
During this education period, signs that are illegally placed in the right-of-way will be removed and disposed of pursuant to city policy.
After an educational period, any sign left on public right-of-way areas may be contraband or abandoned property and may lawfully be removed and disposed of and persons who place or are responsible for the signs may be subject to forfeitures of up to $326.50 per violation.
