The nearly unthinkable happened Tuesday night at American Family Field as the Philadelphia Phillies knocked off the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 in the first of a three game series. It was a game that was setting up like so many already had. Christian Yelich singled twice and scored both runs, coming home on a Rowdy Tellez RBI single in the first inning and Andrew McCutcheon’s single in the 4th for a 2-1 lead. Making just his second big league start, Jason Alexander got some timely double play help behind him but gave up only one run on 7 hits through his five innings of work.
The bullpen did it’s job, Hoby Milner getting out of the sixth, Brad Boxberger got a hold in the 7th, save for Devin Williams in the 8th. On came Josh Hader for the ninth with that still, slim one run lead. Hader had been perfect in save opportunities this year and his run of 40 consecutive scoreless appearances had tied a major league record. He’ll just have to share it as the Phillies took Hader deep not once, but twice. Alex Bohm caught up to a high fastball for the solo shot that tied the game and one batter later, pinch hitter Matt Vierling stunned Brewer fans by going yard. It was the first run allowed by Hader since July of last year.
Milwaukee lost their 4th straight and also lost Kolton Wong to a quad strain but Manager Craig Counsell doesn’t believe it to be a long term injury.
The Brewers (33-24) will send Adrian Houser to the mound against Aaron Nola in game two Wednesday night. Pre- game coverage begins at 6:35 PM with the first pitch at 7:10 PM on WTAQ.
