The Wisconsin Badgers have hired Mark D’Onofrio as their new linebackers coach. He fills out the last vacancy on Head Coach Paul Chryst’s staff. After being out of football for two years, D’Onofrio spent 20 years coaching at the collegiate level. He was an outstanding linebacker in his playing days at Penn State and he was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the second round of the 1992 draft, the first under new General Manager Ron Wolf, who tabbed Florida State defensive back Terrell Buckley with his first ever pick.
D’Onofrio was impressive in that ’92 training camp and appeared to be headed toward a solid career but in the second game of the regular season, he tore a hamstring and the injury was so severe it proved to be career ending. Wolf later said he was convinced D’Onofrio could have been a perennial Pro Bowl linebaker for the Packers.
