EAU CLAIRE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK)- A lawsuit was filed on behalf of a victim who allegedly contracted an infection after eating vegetables purchased at a convenience store chain.
The lawsuit against Kwik Trip was filed in Wisconsin Circuit Court Eau Claire County Thursday. It comes less than a week after Kwik Trip removed some vegetable trays from its shelves after several reported illnesses in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
According to court documents, the plaintiff, Averie G, purchased multiple Del Monte vegetable trays from Kwik Trip in Eau Claire from May 14 through May 29, 2018. On or about May 30, the plaintiff began suffering from symptoms of a Cyclospora infection.
She sought medical care on June 8 and was diagnosed with Cyclospora the next day. Officials say she continues to suffer symptoms and fatigue from her illness.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services announced the outbreak on June 8, warning people not to consume Del Monte Vegetable Trays containing broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and dill dip.
Officials say 11 people in Wisconsin and three in Minnesota reported buying the vegetable trays at Kwik Trip before getting sick.
Cyclospora causes severe gastroenteritis in humans. Symptoms of cyclosporiasis include diarrhea, loss of appetite, cramping, nausea, fatigue, fever, and dehydration. If left untreated, symptoms can last several months or longer.
